"For a long time I've been trying to convince people,'' she told an audience of hundreds in San Francisco this week. "How could it be? How out of touch could they be? But now the public will see."
Pelosi made the comments at the NARAL Pro-Choice America "Power of Choice" luncheon sponsored by the country's largest abortion rights organization -- a gathering at the Intercontinental Hotel that attracted hundreds, including a crowd of pols.
Here's Pelosi, captured by our own SFChronicle/SFGate.com Shaky Hand Productions, on H.R. 1, the budget proposal by the GOP, which aims to defund Planned Parenthood, an organization that serves millions of American women. She and other speakers characterized the move as a Republican "war on women":
Pelosi's bottom line: Conservative GOP legislators, who have long taken aim at abortion funding, need "a lesson in the birds and bees. If you don't want to terminate a pregnancy, you might want to prevent it. Family planning funding? People really get this. Does that give you any picture of how insulting their mentality is?"
And here's NARAL Pro-Choice America president Nancy Keenan, talking about the challenge ahead for pro-choice organizations now waging what she called a multi-front battle -- at both the state and federal level. It's one she said may be the most important since the passage of the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade which made abortion legal in the United States:
Keenan and Pelosi were joined at the event by a Rep. Jackie Speier (who, like Pelosi, received a standing ovation) and San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who's also a candidate for mayor -- and who said that the recent GOP budget proposals to defund Planned Parenthood represent an unprecedented attack on women's rights.
Our full report on the event, which raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, is available here.
