SAN MATEO, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo,) stating that it was time to “end the delay in May,” is asking veterans with backlogged claims at the Oakland VA to join her at a “fix-it meeting” on Monday, May 21, 2012 from 1-4 p.m. in Room 207 of The War Memorial Building, 401 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco.
Veterans are waiting an average of 320 days to receive a decision from the VA’s Oakland office which handles claims from Kern County to the Oregon border. Some 34,000 claims remain unsettled at the office which has the VA’s second highest case delay record in the nation.
Rep. Speier said that the Oakland VA director and the VA’s Western Regional director have agreed to meet with members of Congress and veterans on May 21 in San Francisco. The VA will have claims representatives on site to help veterans.
Speier stated, “We’re going to make a difference in some lives on May 21. Men and women who served our country have been subjected to prolonged delays that have prevented them from receiving the benefits they deserve. We’re going to identify what parts of the process aren’t working based on the statements of veterans with outstanding claims. The VA will be ready to correct records and to get claims moving again. Congressional staff and service organizations will also be available to help veterans with claims issues.“
But Speier emphasized that day will belong to veterans who are willing to speak out about their claims. Veterans should sign up for the “fix-it meeting” in advance so that claims can be reviewed prior to May 21. To sign up call Rep. Speier’s office at 650-342-0300; or email Richard Steffen, district director, at email@example.com ; or visit her website at www.speier.house.gov for further information.
She added, “It’s time to end the delay in May with a fix-it meeting.”
American Legion Enterprise Post 236 and American Legion Cathay Post 384 are collaborating with Rep. Speier and other congressional offices to reach out to the Northern California veteran community.
