Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) today introduced H. RES. 58, a  resolution designating the first Saturday in January as “National Congress on Your Corner Day.”

“This resolution will help us convey to our constituents, to the nation and to the world that our democracy is strong and vibrant and is truly a government of the people, by the people and for the people,” Speier said. “In the wake of the tragedy in Tucson, we must continue to hold public events and be accessible, not just in January but throughout the year.”

The resolution comes less than three weeks after Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, her staff, and constituents were shot in an appalling act of violence. It states Giffords “best exemplifies the United States’ representative form of government and democratic ideals” and “‘Congress on Your Corner’ events provide valuable opportunities for each Member of Congress to hear directly from those they represent.”

“We cannot allow a single gunman to alter our representative form of government,” Speier said today in a speech on the House floor. “In that spirit, I will be holding a ‘Congress on Your Corner’ in my district this weekend.”

Speier’s event will be held on Saturday, January 29 from 10:00 am-Noon at the corner of Laurel Street and San Carlos Avenue in San Carlos.
