Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA) today released the following statement after President Obama and military leaders certified a repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

“We are finally on the brink of ending this discriminatory policy once and for all. ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ has weakened our national security and runs counter to the values we stand for as Americans. A person’s fitness for service should be determined by their patriotism, valor, and ability to carry out the mission, not sexual orientation. Many of our allies have already enacted polices of open service without any harm to battle readiness or unit cohesion. With the President and military leaders now certifying repeal, we are just 60 days away from making ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ a policy of the past. It’s about time.”
