Speier and Gould will visit Mercy High School in Burlingame and Mills High School in Millbrae.

“I am thrilled that Phyllis will join me in inspiring these young high school students to fight for equality for themselves and future generations,” Speier said. “Ironically, the Rosies received the same pay as men during World War II. Today, women make only 79 cents to every dollar a man makes. For African American women and Latinas, the disparity is even worse. Add to that the fact that women are often charged higher prices for consumer products and services; an unacceptable practice I call the pink tax that I’m working to eliminate. It is time for us to level the playing field.”

Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day in 1971 to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote in 1920. Speier introduced H.R. 5686, the Pink Tax Repeal Act, in July. The bill would end gender-based discrimination in the pricing of goods and services. Rep. Speier has also sponsored H.J. Res. 51, a resolution to remove the deadline, so that three more states can ratify the equal rights amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
