San Mateo, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) received 5,500 cards created by elementary to high school students from 37 schools in response to her call to create Valentine’s Day cards for veterans. The effort was supported by Nancy Magee, Superintendent of the San Mateo County Office of Education, and her staff. Speier’s staff will deliver the cards to the San Francisco VA Medical Center, 4150 Clement Street, at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 14th.

“The support and admiration from our student for the men and women who have served our country is heartening and reassuring that we can come together as a nation,” Speier said. “This will be the ninth year since I have joined with San Mateo County schools to begin the tradition of making valentines cards inspired by newspaper columnist Ann Landers. I applaud these young students for caring and being creative.”

Rep. Speier was inspired by syndicated newspaper columnist Ann Landers who 30 years ago encouraged her readers to send valentines cards to veterans in VA facilities across the country. Millions of cards, letters, and packages have been delivered to veterans ever since.
