Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA), one of the co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian issues, released the following statement after the House voted to pass her amendment to designate $40 million to Armenian democracy assistance from the Europe, Eurasia, and Central Asia Fund. Rep Speier’s bill passed the House by a vote of 268 to 152. The amendment expresses the House’s support for Armenian democracy and will lead State and USAID to devote additional resources to assist its growth. After the House votes to pass the appropriations minibus, the bill will go to the Senate for approval.

“Armenia’s democracy has grown by leaps and bounds over the last year. By instructing State and USAID to allocate $40 million to Armenian democracy assistance we are showing the world that the United States will work alongside Armenians to build a strong, lasting democracy,” Rep. Speier said. “As I have noted previously, the House has already committed $83 million to Georgia, $51 million to Moldova, and $250 million to Ukraine. Adding an explicit, generous allocation for Armenia is just and necessary. I’m proud to see that the majority of my colleagues in the House agree. The Senate now has the opportunity to affirm this commitment to a continued partnership between the United States and Armenia.”
