Washington, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14), Chair of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel, released the following statement after the House voted to pass H.Con.Res. 83, which prevents the President from using the military in hostilities in or against Iran:

“Today’s bipartisan 224-194 vote sends a strong message to President Trump that we will not tolerate dangerous foreign policy whims that cannot be justified as ‘imminent.’

Since taking office, the President has made Americans less safe and jeopardized our interests in the Middle East through his bellicose and willfully ignorant actions in support of an undefined strategy that has only served to unite the region against the United States. By withdrawing the U.S. from the nuclear deal, imposing harsher sanctions, and taking out Qasem Soleimani, President Trump has shown Iran that he thinks only force can resolve the differences between our countries. Iran has responded in kind, putting us on the precipice of a disastrous war that would endanger the 65,000-plus U.S. servicemembers and hundreds of embassy staff in the Middle East. Trump’s actions have put Iran closer to a nuclear weapon, empowered its proxy forces to be more aggressive across the region, undermined our position with our allies, and galvanized hatred for America.”

Our vote shows the President that neither the House nor the American people support war with Iran. The resolution directs President Trump not to use U.S. military assets in hostilities against or in Iran, unless Congress authorizes it. This vote makes clear that the President lacks the constitutional authority to fight Iran and will help put breaks on his horrifying march to war.”
