Washington, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) issued the following statement after the inauguration of President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. and Vice President Kamala D. Harris.

“Today, our country celebrates the inauguration of President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. and Vice President Kamala D. Harris as the 46th President and Vice President of the United States of America. ‘This is America’s day. This is democracy’s day. A day in history and hope, of renewal and resolve,’ as President Biden declared.

This is also an historic day as we laud our nation’s first woman, first Black American, and first South Asian American to serve as Vice President. And though we still face grave challenges, from the worst of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic to those among us seeking to destroy our democracy and to use violence as a means to assert autocratic control, we are equipped to meet those challenges with President Biden and Vice President Harris at the helm.

Today, President Biden exuded competence, compassion, and credibility. He exhorted all of us to embrace unity, to disagree if necessary but not be disagreeable, and to truly listen to the other side. He certainly sounded a note of cooperation that has been lacking for four years. He quoted the Bible and recalled his familial stories that have fed his faith and ability to reach out to Americans from all walks of life during his nearly 50 years of service to our country.

He also vowed to immediately get to work to build America back better—it’s a vow that we must all honor to move forward. We can make friends of our enemies. We can return to truth and justice. We can honor the words and the work of our founding fathers and continue to strive toward that more perfect union by coming together as our American motto states: Out of many, one.”
