Academy Award Winner Mahershala Ali to Join Reps Speier, King, McGovern, Smith for Religious Tolerance Discussion

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA), Congressman Peter King (R-NY), Co-Chairs of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Congressional Caucus, will be joined by Congressman Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ), Co-Chairs of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, for “A Conversation with U.S. Lawmakers about Religious Persecution.” The dialogue will feature two-time Academy Award winning Actor Mahershala Ali, who made history as the first Muslim Actor to ever win the prestigious award.

The event will examine the need for U.S. leadership and a coordinated effort from the international community in promoting religious tolerance worldwide. It will feature testimonials from survivors of religious persecution. Special remarks will be provided by Ali, who won Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in Green Book this year and Moonlight in 2017. Ali follows the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam, which is outlawed in Pakistan. As such, Ahmadis cannot practice their faith in that country without facing legal prosecution or vigilante violence.
