Congresswoman Jackie Speier’s Response to the Release of Nunes’s Memo

February 2, 2018
Press Release

Washington, DC –Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) released the following statement today in response to the White House’s reckless release of House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes’s memo despite serious objections and concerns raised by the FBI and Department of Justice.

“It’s not surprising to see the President willing to sacrifice anyone or anything, including our ability to protect our national security and Americans at home and abroad, to save his own hide. It is, however, terrifying to watch Republican leadership enable the spread of his false narrative in spite of all sense of reason and duty,” Rep. Speier said. “From the implication that our intelligence agencies are a part of some ‘Deep State’ conspiracy to help the Democrats, to the willful manipulation and misstatement of key facts in the Russia investigation, the President – and those working with him – is eroding the very cornerstones of our democracy and slow-walking us into a constitutional crisis. I urge my Republican colleagues to wake up and finally put their country before party. I would also remind them that history rarely judges those who claim to be just following orders kindly, and it also teaches that who rely on lies, intimidation, and manipulation may succeed in the short term, but they very rarely win.”
