Congresswoman Jackie Speier Statement Regarding FBI Warning of Russian Malware Attack
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Jackie Speier, Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI), released the following statement today in light of the FBI’s warning that hundreds of thousands of home and small office routers and other networked devices have been compromised worldwide in a Russian malware attack. The malware is able to collect information, block network traffic, and exploit devices, all unbeknownst to the computer owner.
“Russia will stop at nothing to undermine our democracy, attacking us at the ballot box, inbox, and even our home IT hardware,” Rep. Speier said. “I encourage everyone to take the following FBI-recommended measures to protect their home and small office routers.”
FBI cyber experts have released the following guidance that everyone can follow to protect their home and small office routers, particularly models from Linksys, MikroTik, Netgear Inc, TP-Link and QNAP.
- Reset your router by turning it off and back on again.
- Download updates from the manufacturer to ensure you have the latest software.
