Congresswoman Speier Calls for Public Hearing with Former FBI Director Comey
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14), Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and Ranking Member on the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel, on Wednesday issued the following statement in response to reports that President Trump requested that FBI Director James Comey drop his investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.
“I cannot overstate how grave I find the President's alleged request to FBI Director James Comey to shut down an active investigation. If true, this request, together with the President’s subsequent firing of Director Comey, would establish at least one of the elements of obstruction of justice. It is time for Congress to fully exercise its constitutional responsibilities to check and balance the Executive Branch. Mr. Comey must reappear before the House Intelligence Committee in open session and the Department of Justice must appoint an independent special counsel to investigate collusion between Russia and the President’s campaign and transition staff.”
