Congresswoman Speier to Deliver Early “Valentines for Vets” from Local Students

February 1, 2018
Press Release

San Mateo, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) will deliver 1,000 valentines cards created by elementary and high school students to veterans at the Fort Miley VA Medical Center in San Francisco on Friday, February 2nd at 9 a.m.

Speier, in collaboration with Anne E. Campbell, Superintendent of the San Mateo County Office of Education, has collected valentines cards for veterans in her Congressional District since 2013, and every year receives thousands of cards. Last year she received over 6,000 cards from 60 schools.

“I am so excited to actually deliver some of the cards myself this year,” Speier said. “Every year I am deeply touched by the beautiful artwork and heartfelt messages the students are sending to our brave men and women in uniform. They are a powerful symbol of connection, respect and unity.”

Speier will deliver the first batch of cards her office has received. Her office will continue to collect artwork until February 5th.

Speier was inspired by the tradition that syndicated newspaper columnist Ann Landers started 29 years ago, when she encouraged her readers to send valentines cards to veterans in VA facilities across the country. Millions of cards, letters, and packages have been delivered to veterans ever since.
