Congresswoman Speier, DWWG introduce Bill to Defend Title IX

Bill will codify Title IX protections, condemns Education Secretary DeVos' Decision to Rescind Protections for Sexual Violence Survivors

Washington, DC – Following the egregious decision by the Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to rescind the Department’s 2011guidance which clarified schools’ responsibilities under Title IX to protect students against sexual violence, Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) and the leadership of the Democratic Women’s Working Group are introducing the Title IX Protection Act. The bill, authored by Rep. Speier, is bill will codify the 2011 guidance and 2014 Question and Answers document on sexual violence and the 2001 guidance on sexual harassment, the latter of which was issued by the Clinton Administration and later reissued in 2006 under the George W. Bush Administration.

Members of Congress will be joined by the National Women’s Law Center, the American Association of University Women, Know Your IX, and End Rape on Campus. The bill is supported by the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), American Association of University Women (AAUW), Know Your IX, Futures Without Violence, Girls Inc., End Rape on Campus (EROC).
