Congresswoman Speier to Highlight Better Deal Economic Agenda to Bring Good Jobs to the Bay Area

August 26, 2017
Press Release

San Mateo, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) will hold a press conference about efforts to bring good jobs with good wages to the Bay Area on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 10 a.m. at the College of San Mateo, Building 10. She will be joined by Ron Galatolo, San Mateo County Community College District Chancellor; AJ Thomas, Senior Director of Talent at Ten-X and NOVA partner; Karen Fullerton, Founder of Open Access and NOVA partner; Dorothy Davis, Digital Marketing and Media Program graduate; William Tyler, Autism Advantage Program graduate; and Christina Fernandez, SAMCEDA Public Policy Associate and NOVA partner.

NOVA Workforce Development is a federally funded employment and training agency serving residents and businesses in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. They work closely with local businesses, community colleges, and job seekers to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to address the workforce needs of Silicon Valley.

“The Bay Area is the innovation hub of our country. We are lucky to have some of the lowest unemployment rates, but that doesn’t mean that the economy is great for everyone, especially against the backdrop of the sky-high cost of living here,” Speier said. “The Bay Area job market suffers from a disconnect between employees’ skills and employers’ needs. If we connect the dots, we will create good jobs with good wages.”

At the press conference, Dorothy Davis will share her experience taking the Digital Marketing and Media Program at the College of San Mateo which landed her a supervisory position in the digital advertising industry. William Tyler will share his experience going through the Autism Advantage Program which led him to pursue a certificate in Data Science through UC Irvine’s online program.
