Congresswoman Speier to Host Panel on Overcoming Sexual Trauma

October 24, 2018
Press Release

San Mateo, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) will host a panel discussion about overcoming sexual trauma titled “We Believe Survivors” in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 7 p.m. at the San Mateo City Council Chambers. She will be joined by domestic violence survivors Rosa Brenes and Jessica Hudson; renowned law professor and writer Catharine A. MacKinnon of Harvard Law School; Colsaria Hederson, Executive Director CORA, Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse; Amanda LeBlanc Freeman, Program Director Rape Trauma Services; Al Serrato, Chief Deputy District Attorney, San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office; and Ryan Monaghan, Lieutenant San Mateo Police Department.

“The impact of sexual trauma is severe and very difficult to overcome,” Rep. Speier said. “In addition to being physically and psychologically scarred, victims are often revictimized by being discredited and dismissed. This was particularly obvious during the Justice Kavanaugh confirmation hearings. His testimony in response to Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s reporting of sexual assault is why so many women won’t come forward. Research shows that false reporting is very rare at only two to eight percent. That’s why I am hosting this panel sending a clear message: We believe survivors.”

Seventy percent of women worldwide will experience physical or sexual abuse by an intimate partner in their lifetime. In the U.S., nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner. One in five women and one in 71 men in the U.S. have been raped in their lifetime.
