Congresswoman Speier to Host Panel on Psychological Impacts of Cancer

October 29, 2018
Press Release

San Mateo, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) will host a panel discussion about the emotional and mental health needs related to breast cancer in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Monday, October 29th at 7 p.m. at City College of San Francisco. She will be joined by breast cancer survivor and Bay Area Young Survivors member Ali Kent; tattoo artist Sasha Merritt; UCSF Psycho-Oncologist Dr. Dianne Shumay; Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital Avon Breast Imaging Center Clinician Dr. Amie Lee; and Genentech BioOncology Senior Vice President Christy Oliger.
“Many women report feeling shock, distress, anxiety and depression during and after treatment for cancer,” Rep. Speier said. “Many women, especially younger women and women in underserved communities, don’t know how to find affordable care and resources. This year more than 250,000 individuals will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 11 percent of them will be younger than 45. This event is designed to offer emotional support and local resources for patients, survivors, family and friends.”
