Congresswoman Speier Named Fearless Woman by Newsweek Magazine
WASHINGTON, DC- Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) this week was named by Newsweek Magazine and the Daily Beast to their list of 150 Fearless Women of the world. Under the heading of, “150 Women Who Shake the World,” Newsweek’s March 12, 2012 edition honors heroes and the growing network of powerful women who support their efforts.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be named a Fearless Woman by Newsweek,” said Congresswoman Speier. “I believe that I have a responsibility to use my voice as an elected official to advocate for women everywhere. When I first found out about the epidemic of rape and sexual assault in the military, I knew I needed to use the microphone that I have as a Member of Congress to advocate for the servicewomen and men who were raped by colleagues and then punished for reporting that they were victims of a crime. That’s why I have stood on the floor of the House 15 times to tell their stories and I will continue to tell their stories until the broken system is fixed.
“The real heroes on the list of fearless women are the ones who risk their lives and reputations everyday to make a better life for themselves, their families, and women everywhere,” said Speier.
On Friday, March 9, Congresswoman Speier will participate as a panelist in the Women in the World conference hosted by Newsweek to discuss the STOP Act, her legislation to combat rape and sexual assault in the military.
