Congresswoman Speier’s Statement on Administration’s Use of Known Hate Group’s Propaganda to Attack Planned Parenthood
WASHINGTON –Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) released the following statement regarding the findings that Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Ranking Member Elijah E. Cummings made in a letter released today. The evidence concluded that the Alliance Defending Freedom is behind the Trump Administration’s decision to allow states to terminate Planned Parenthood as an eligible health care provider for Medicaid patients.
“I am gravely concerned that the Trump Administration has given voice to a hate group that continues to spread unsubstantiated claims made by David Daleiden, who has been charged with 15 felony counts in California for publishing a series of doctored videos designed to attack Planned Parenthood. Daleiden has been found in contempt of court for continuing to disseminate those videos, despite the court’s order to stop. Yet his work is the basis from which our President and his Administration has chosen to craft policy that affects how every American can access health care. To say this is reckless and an abomination of the governing process is an understatement.
“But that is just the tip of the iceberg. The Administration is not only promoting guidance that allows states to discriminate against providers without any sound basis, it has colluded with this rightwing hate group to legitimize this discrimination, raising serious ethical concerns.
“I strongly condemn any action by the Administration that violates the stated mission of the Department of Health and Human Services and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to protect the rights of all Americans to access the health care provider of their choice, and I concur with Ranking Member Cummings that all documents relating to this issue must be made public. The American public deserves nothing less.”
