Congresswoman Speier’s Statement on Donald Trump’s Proposal to Halt Muslim Immigration to the United States

December 8, 2015
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) released the following statement about presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposal for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.”

"Mr. Trump's proposal to ban Muslim immigration to the United States is profoundly unwise and unconstitutional—it runs contrary to American values and it cannot be condemned in strong enough terms. Today American leaders across the political spectrum, from Dick Cheney to Bernie Sanders, have pointed out that such demagoguery has no place in our society and it threatens our national security by poisoning our relations with the Muslim world and making Islamic communities in the United States feel deeply threatened. It is an insult to all the Muslims who have fought against ISIS and Al Qaeda as members of our military, and to the countless Muslims who have died at the hands of those depraved killers. In this time of fear and disorder, we cannot allow such language to go unchallenged and we must stand up for the values of decency, fairness, and tolerance that make the United States a light among nations and an example for the world. We must protect our citizens from extremist violence, and the right way to do that is to stand resolute against the threat while upholding the values that made us a great nation in the first place."
