Congresswoman Speier to Take 120 High School Girls on Field Trip to Rosie the Riveter Museum on Women’s Equality Day
San Mateo, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) is sponsoring 120 high school girls and chaperones from her district to visit the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California in honor of Women’s Equality Day on August 26. Students from five schools in the 14th Congressional District will travel by bus, visit the museum and Memorial and meet some real life Rosies. Phyllis Gould, her sister Marion Sousa and Betty Soskin will be present and available to talk to the students. Sousa and Soskin are rangers at the museum. Soskin, 95, is the oldest National Park Ranger serving in the U.S.
“I am excited to look at history with the next generation of innovators, thinkers and leaders,” Speier said. “I hope that the girls will be inspired by the Rosies’ efforts and sacrifices during World War II to make their own contributions during their lifetimes. Connecting generations is what brings history to life.
“Rosie the Riveter is arguably the most iconic image of working women during the war, but what many people don’t realize is that they were paid the same wages as men. Today women earn on average 80 cents for every dollar made by men and the wage gap is even worse for most women of color. We should take a page from the history books and, like the Rosies, demand equal pay for equal work.”
Congress designated August 26th as Women’s Equality Day in 1971 to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote in 1920. Rep. Speier is an enthusiastic advocate for the Equal Rights Amendment. She has sponsored H.J. Res. 53, a resolution to remove the deadline, so that only three more states are needed to ratify the ERA to the U.S. Constitution. On March 22, 2017, Nevada became the first of the three states to ratify the ERA. Additional efforts are underway in Illinois and Virginia.
This field trip is for invited students only, but is open to the media.
