Congresswoman Speier, UC Berkeley Professor Daniel Kammen, Impossible Foods CEO Pat Brown to Discuss Climate Change at Town Hall
San Mateo, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) will host her eleventh town hall this year, titled “A Conversation about America: Climate Change,” at the San Francisco Zoo on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 from 7 to 8 p.m. She will be joined by renowned climate and energy expert Daniel Kammen and the CEO of Impossible Foods, which makes a plant-based burger, Pat Brown. The event is at capacity, but will be streamed live on Congresswoman Speier’s Facebook page.
“Hurricane Harvey is showing us the devastating consequences of climate change,” Speier said. “2016 was the hottest year on record and had the highest concentrations in greenhouse gases and the highest sea levels. Extreme weather events will continue to wreak havoc on our planet unless we succeed in slowing climate change. The good news in California is that Californians overwhelmingly favor such efforts even if they bring increased costs. Inaction is not an option.”
Speier continued, “I make it a point to bring stellar speakers to my town halls - this one is no exception. I am thrilled to have Dan Kammen and Pat Brown share their expertise and innovative spirit.”
Dr. Kammen teaches at UC Berkeley's Energy and Resources Group, the Goldman School of Public Policy and the department of Nuclear Engineering. He has written 12 books and more than 300 peer-reviewed journal publications. He has testified at over 40 congressional briefings and provided various governments with more than 50 technical reports. He has also contributed to numerous reports of the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change. The IPCC shared the Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore in 2007.
Last week, Dr. Kammen drew national attention when he resigned as science envoy to the State Department in response to President Trump’s comments about fatal violence in Charlottesville. In his resignation letter, the first letter of each paragraph spelled out IMPEACH.
Impossible Foods is a Redwood City-based startup that makes plant-based burgers. Pat Brown, the CEO and Stanford biochemistry professor emeritus, founded the company to reduce the environmental impact of the food system. Beef production has the highest water use, land use and greenhouse gas emissions of any livestock system. An Impossible Foods burger reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 7/8th compared to a beef burger.
This is one in an ongoing series of town halls that Rep. Speier has hosted since the beginning of this year. Previous town halls have been held in Pacifica, San Francisco, San Mateo, South San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, and Redwood City.
