Congresswomen Speier Seeks United Call to Action to Pass Equal Rights Amendment on Women’s Equality Day

August 26, 2014
Press Release

SAN MATEO, CA – Congresswomen Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo/Redwood City) will conduct a United Call to Action and rally on the need to pass the Equal Rights Amendment on Tuesday August 26, 3:30 p.m., on the sidewalk in front of the steps to the Supreme Court. In March, Congresswoman Speier offered a joint resolution to remove the deadline for the ratification of the ERA. The Call to Action also celebrates Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the ratification of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920.

“Recent Supreme Court decisions have sent women’s rights back to the Stone Age. Justice Scalia reminds us that the constitution does not prohibit discrimination based on sex and that corporations have more rights than women do. Scalia’s words should haunt every woman in America,” Congresswoman Speier said. “It’s beyond belief that in the 21st century women do not have the same equal protections under the constitution that men do. The ERA was introduced in Congress in 1923, and 90 years later we are still fighting to get the word ‘women’ in the constitution.”

The ERA was introduced into every Congress between 1923 and 1972, when it was passed and sent to the states for ratification. Currently 35 of the 38 states needed for its passage have approved the amendment. Congresswoman Speier’s joint resolution, H.Res.113 has 143 co-sponsors.
