Democratic Women’s Working Group to Host Hearing on Urgency of Paid Family and Medical Leave

June 20, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – In response to President Trump’s wholly inadequate proposal for paid parental leave, included in his disastrous budget, the Democratic Women’s Working Group (DWWG) will host a hearing about the urgent need for a comprehensive paid family and medical leave program.

At some point, nearly everyone will need to take time off work for family or medical reasons, but just 13 percent of workers have access to paid leave through their employers. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) only guarantees 12 weeks of unpaid leave for some workers – far less than what workers receive in other industrialized nations. These insufficient policies strain family budgets and make it difficult for workers to remain in the labor force. The lack of paid leave also cuts parents’ time with their newborns short, jeopardizing child and maternal health.

During the hearing, witnesses will discuss gaps in coverage for working families and the financial hardships incurred, as well as give examples of successful paid leave models in the states and explain the business case for a federal paid leave program. Members will highlight Democratic solutions like the FAMILY Act, legislation authored by Rep. Rosa DeLauro, that would ensure workers can take up to 12 weeks of paid leave for a pregnancy, the birth or adoption of a child, to recover from a serious illness, or to care for a seriously ill family member.

Members of the media interested in attending the hearing should RSVP to Rachel.huxley-cohen@mail.house.gov. The hearing will also be streamed LIVE here.
