Rep. Speier and Public Health Experts to Demand Gun Violence Research

June 6, 2019
Press Release

Washington, DC – On Tuesday, June 11, 2019, Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) will be joined by public health experts and hundreds of Scrubs Addressing the Firearm Epidemic (SAFE) members to call for federal gun violence research.

“Our gun violence epidemic is a public health crisis. Just like research into seat belts and airbags was an essential step towards preventing accidents and injuries, research into gun violence will save American lives,” Speier said. “The GOP and the gun lobby have stymied this research for far too long. We must recognize that we need evidence-based solutions and the expertise of doctors, nurses and other health professionals to finally address the root causes of gun violence.”

Rep. Speier, a survivor of gun violence, carried the California assault weapons ban in the California Assembly which was passed into law. In Congress, she has been a tireless champion of long-overdue gun safety reforms and federal funding for gun violence research.
