Rep. Speier Calls for DoD to Review Decision to Withhold Unclassified and Previously Public Nuclear Inspection Reports

August 1, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14), Ranking Member on the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel and Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, on Tuesday led a letter to Acting Department of Defense Inspector General Glenn Fine, requesting he review the decision by the Department of Defense to start withholding unclassified, summary results of routine nuclear safety and security inspections. These inspection results had previously been available to the public.

“The public must have the highest confidence that our nuclear arsenal is being managed safely and responsibly. The Department of Defense has not adequately explained the reasoning behind its abrupt decision to conceal this unclassified information. The Pentagon has never asserted that reporting on nuclear inspection results has compromised nuclear security, and transparency in our nuclear enterprise serves as an example of responsible behavior for other nuclear powers to emulate,” Rep. Speier said. “Hiding these inspection results gives the impression that the negligence and misconduct that then-Secretary Hagel sought to address in 2014 persists unabated. I thank my colleagues, Congressmen Adam Smith and Jim Cooper, for joining me in this request to the Inspector General to ensure that the Pentagon is prioritizing accountability ahead of spin control.”

She was joined by Congressmen Adam Smith (WA-9), the Ranking Member on the House Armed Services Committee, and Jim Cooper (TN-5), Ranking Member on the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces.
