Rep Speier, Caucus Co-Chairs Introduce Resolution Declaring July 30th National Whistleblower Appreciation Day

March 15, 2019
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC -- Representative Jackie Speier (CA-14) and the other Co-Chairs of the bipartisan House Whistleblower Protection Caucus – Reps. Elijah Cummings (MD-7), Mark Meadows (NC-11), and Kathleen Rice (NY-4) – were joined by Reps. Dina Titus (NV- 01) and Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC) on Thursday to introduce a resolution declaring July 30, 2019 as National Whistleblower Appreciation Day.

H. Res. 240 reminds Americans of the important role whistleblowers have played in our history, dating back to our nation’s earliest days. July 30, 2019 is the 241st anniversary of the first whistleblower legislation introduced by the Continental Congress. That law encouraged all government employees and citizens to provide informaiton on "misconduct, frauds, or misdemeanors."

“Whistleblowers have always been the eyes and ears of the U.S. Congress, helping us to expose problems and identify solutions for Americans,” Rep. Speier said. “Since Congress substantially strengthened the False Claims Act in 1986, recoveries by the US Treasury of squandered taxpayer money now exceed $56 billion. Not one penny of that monumental sum would have been reclaimed were it not for the courage and commitment of whistleblowers. They deserve our utmost respect and protection, not to be fed to the wolves of corporate greed and special interests.”

Rep. Cummings said, Whistleblowers are of vital importance to the work of Congress. Now, more than ever, it is important for Congress to send the message that we will fight to protect the right of whistleblowers to expose wrongdoing. This resolution sends that message.”

“I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of this resolution. Whistleblowers are essential to exposing waste, fraud, and other abuses, and they do so at serious personal and professional risk. Speaking truth to power is never easy, and we need to ensure that their courage is never taken for granted and that they are always protected from retaliation,” Rep. Kathleen Rice said.
