Rep. Speier Condemns Trump Administration’s Threats to Back Out of Paris Climate Accord
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) released the following statement in response to reports that the Trump Administration is expected to announce this week that it will not honor the landmark, 195-signatory Paris Climate Accord to significantly slow the progress of global warming.
“I am deeply disturbed and concerned that President Trump reportedly plans to back out of the Paris Climate agreement. His lack of understanding and leadership on one of the most critical issues facing not only our country, but the world, directly threatens American safety and prosperity. In my District alone, more than 100,000 people, more than $20 billion in property, and a major international airport are threatened by sea level rise. Despite my disappointment and sadness at the possibility of President Trump’s betrayal of future generations, I am confident that Bay Area regional leaders and California state leaders will continue to lead the way in fighting climate change through both innovation and investment. We will not shirk our responsibility to our fellow Americans in this moment of environmental crisis, nor will we leave our man-made problems for others to suffer and solve,” Rep Speier said.
