June 14, 2017
Press Release

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) on Wednesday released the following statement in response to a gunman who opened fire on a baseball practice at a park in Alexandria, VA early Wednesday, wounding House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, two Capitol Police officers, and a staff member.

“I want to thank our brave Capitol Police and the first responders who no doubt saved many lives in Alexandria this morning, and who put their lives on the line every day to protect us. I also want to wish Majority Whip Steve Scalise, and all those injured and impacted by this horrific attack, a swift recovery. We must not let atrocious acts like this prevent us from fulfilling the highest ideals of our democracy. The foundation of our government is based on the principal of vigorous but peaceful debate. We will not allow this violence to sway us from our duties in Congress, or undermine that sacred foundation.”
