Rep. Speier Supports Leader Pelosi as House Speaker

November 27, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) today issued the following statement urging fellow House Democrats to join her in supporting Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“There is a reason that Nancy Pelosi made history when she became the first woman ever to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2008. She possessed the astounding ability to understand the interests of every member of the Democratic Caucus and advance the issues that mattered most to our country, often against seemingly insurmountable odds. It is the same reason, though not the only reason, that she will make history once again when she returns to the role of Speaker in the next Congress.

It is her innate understanding of all the issues that affect all Americans and her political acumen – not to mention nerves of steel in the face of unprecedented vitriol – that led to the passage of some of the most important legislation of the 21st Century. That includes the Affordable Care Act and the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. It is through her grit, determination, and grace that Congress was able to pass the $787 billion bipartisan economic stimulus package and credit-card and student-loan reform. It is her energy and drive that propelled her into the history books yet again this year, when she broke a 109-year-old House record with her eight-hour speech in support of Dreamers and bipartisan immigration reform. It is her persistence and optimism that saw her push back against one of the most misogynistic Administrations in the history of our country, and usher in the largest and most diverse class of Freshmen congresswoman this fall.

And it is her battle-tested mettle that is best-suited to hitting the ground running this January. Because we Democrats need to not just defend Social Security, but to strengthen it. We need to deliver on our promise to expand access to high-quality and affordable health care. We need to create more and better living-wage jobs through investment in infrastructure. We need to advance our fight against the corruption and greed that defines the current Administration and threatens our democracy. Now, more than ever, we need a Speaker who is equipped to meet all those demands, one who is ready to execute a plan of action to advance a more progressive agenda, and someone who is looking for new trails to blaze.

In short, we need Nancy Pelosi as the next Speaker of the House. I hope you will join me in my support and in the work that will best serve our constituents as we move forward.”
