Rep Speier Statement on Trump Shutdown

December 21, 2018
Press Release

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s shutdown of the federal government.

"This is a Trump Shutdown and a political stunt designed to appeal to the President’s extreme base, creating convenient confusion and chaos given his impending legal calamities. The President has yet to spend the $1.3 billion Congress has already approved for border security, and instead is obsessed with wasting $5.7 billion for an ineffective border wall that would be a waste of taxpayer dollars. Trump created this crisis and he owns this shutdown, which will hit the Justice Department and Homeland Security the hardest. So much for those border security concerns.

In the waning days of this year and this Congress, this is my message to Republican leaders and to the President: Governing in a democracy requires negotiation and a willingness to put your country above yourself. The President tweets and rants often based on what the last person has whispered in his ear or a talking head has proclaimed on a cable TV show. But that does not absolve him of his duty to lead. The Senate passed a bipartisan spending bill that Leader Pelosi was stopped from introducing in the House. Many of my Republican colleagues sought the President’s Twitter advice before casting their vote on the House floor and ran cowering when his mood and opinions shifted. That isn’t how democracy works, this isn’t how to govern or lead a great nation. For the benefit of our country, we must put to rest the notion that this border wall boondoggle is anything but a Trump reality TV show rerun. And we must immediately fund and reopen the government.”
