Rep. Speier on Trump Administration’s $3.6 billion raid on Military Budget for Border Wall
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier, Chair of the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee, issued the following statement today in response to the Trump Administration’s proposed cuts to the military budget to fund border wall construction.
“The Trump Administration’s $3.6 billion raid on our military budget to satisfy the President’s political ego is nothing short of reckless. Every American should be appalled that the President would rather sacrifice the safety and support of our servicemembers at home and abroad so that he can bluster about his ‘big, beautiful wall.’ The President’s edifice complex erases nearly $350 million set aside to build day care facilities and elementary and high schools. It siphons away over $630 million dollars allocated to special operations and the European Deterrence Initiative. For a man that purports to be commander-in-chief, President Trump’s obsession with his wall harms American servicemembers and their families while weakening our national security posture, especially against Russia and China,” Rep. Speier said. “In a time when our military struggles to recruit and retain valuable men and women, what horrific message does this send to those who now serve or will consider serving? By stripping away billions of dollars approved for military members and their families, the President has effectively declared, ‘My wall is more important than your service.’”
