Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) announced that she will bring Dr. Bennet Omalu to the State of the Union Address. Dr. Omalu is the forensic pathologist and neuropathologist who was the first to publish findings on the impact of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) on football players. Dr. Omalu is portrayed by Will Smith in the film Concussion.

“Hosting Dr. Omalu at the State of the Union is a chance to shine a bright light on the scientific consensus that the NFL has failed to adequately address,” said Speier. “Dr. Bennet Omalu’s insight and persistence on this issue has been crucial to our understanding of the epidemic among players of one of America’s most popular sports. The country is beginning to realize just how dangerous repetitive head injuries are, and the truth could also have serious implications for children playing youth sports and members of our military who experience repeated head trauma throughout their careers. If the NFL is as serious about protecting its players as it says, it needs to accept the science and make a real effort to combat CTE.”

Congresswoman Speier and Dr. Omalu will also host a briefing on Capitol Hill about football and CTE.
