Speier Says PHMSA Directive Is a Liability Wake-Up Call to Pipeline Operators
Congresswoman Jackie Speier issued the following statement on the directive released today by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, the federal agency that regulates natural gas pipeline operators such as PG&E. The directive, attached, applies to all operators in the nation.
"The San Bruno pipeline disaster is a wake-up call for all natural gas pipeline operators in our nation. You can't operate a pipeline safely if you don't match the operating pressure with the type of pipe underground. Today's directive from PHMSA is more than a friendly reminder, it is a liability warning to those who don't know the real operating pressure capacity of pipelines that have been underground for decades."
