Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14), a Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement in response to Facebook’s announcement today that it has uncovered a coordinated disinformation operation ahead of the 2018 midterm elections that bears many of the same hallmarks of previous Russian disinformation campaigns led by the Kremlin-based Internet Research Agency.

“I am alarmed but unsurprised that Russian-style attacks on our democracy continue. We have no chance at stopping this assault until the White House stops dragging its feet on this critical threat to our national security and the foundation of our democracy. President Trump must unequivocally, loudly, and repeatedly denounce Russia for its interference in our 2016 elections, support harsh punishments for those involved, and make clear the dire consequences that will befall those who meddle in our elections,” Rep Speier said. “While I am glad Facebook detected this campaign and proactively disclosed it, we need to do far more at all levels of government and society to prepare ourselves for further malign actions. This includes fully resourcing efforts to harden our cyber-defenses, detect incursions, and follow through with a proportionate response. These disclosures remind us why Congress must vigorously investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election and take appropriate legislative action. If House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes still is not up to this task, Speaker Paul Ryan should replace him,” Rep. Speier said.
