WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswomen Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) and Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan/Queens/Brooklyn) will conduct a United Call to Action and press conference on the need to pass the Equal Rights Amendment on Thursday July 24, 9 a.m., on the sidewalk in front of the steps to the Supreme Court. In March, Congresswoman Speier offered a joint resolution to remove the deadline for the ratification of the ERA and Congresswoman Maloney has introduced a new Equal Rights Amendment that would finally add the word “women” into the U.S. Constitution.

“Recent Supreme Court decisions have sent women’s rights back to the Stone Age. Justice Scalia reminds us that the constitution does not prohibit discrimination based on sex and that corporations have more rights than women do. Scalia’s words should haunt every woman in America,” Congresswoman Speier said. “It’s beyond belief that in the 21st century women do not have the same equal protections under the constitution that men do. The ERA was introduced in Congress in 1923, and 90 years later we are still fighting to get the word ‘women’ in the constitution.”

“We can’t afford to watch the Supreme Court continue to roll back the rights we’ve spent decades working to secure,” said Maloney. “The only way to fully achieve and protect equality for women is to write it directly into our constitution. That effort, which began with Alice Paul and the suffragettes, is not yet over. A century later, women and likeminded men are joining together to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, and we can do it.”

The ERA was introduced into every Congress between 1923 and 1972, when it was passed and sent to the states for ratification. Currently 35 of the 38 states needed for its passage have approved the amendment. Congresswoman Speier’s joint resolution has 143 original co-sponsors.
