WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco / San Mateo) was named a Defender of Children this month by the First Focus Campaign for Children for her support of policies that advance the well-being of children. This is the second time that the Congresswoman earned the distinction. In recognition of the award, she released the following statement:

“I am honored to be named a Defender of Children. As a Member of Congress, it is not only my privilege, but my absolute obligation to protect and support our next generation of leaders. Every child in this country deserves equal access to quality nutrition, health care and early learning opportunities. That is why I am committed to fighting back against cuts that threaten Medicaid access for low-income families and will fight to preserve essential funding for early education, child nutrition and safety programs.

“Further, because every child who fights and overcomes cancer must have access to state of the art follow-up treatment, I will continue to push my bill, the Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult Cancer Survivorship Research and Quality of Life Act until it becomes law.

“In partnership with the First Focus Campaign for Children, I will continue to advocate for our youngest Americans.”
