Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) was named a senior whip this week by House Democratic leadership. The whip team meets regularly to develop legislation and amendments that will create jobs and strengthen the middle class. They also work to build strong support within the caucus for this agenda, especially on key votes.

“I thank Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer for appointing me to this leadership position. I look forward to using this post to advance legislation that benefits my constituents in the 12th District of California. First and foremost, this means putting people back to work and saving Medicare from elimination. I am also committed to working with my colleagues to reduce the deficit, make America more energy independent, and protect everything from the environment to women’s health care. Being part of the whip team will allow me to play a leading role in the upcoming debates on issues important to the people I represent.”

“I am pleased to announce that Rep. Jackie Speier will serve as a Senior Whip in the 112th Congress,” said Hoyer. “Rep. Speier has worked tirelessly to advance Democratic priorities and will be a strong addition to the Senior Whip team.  I look forward to working with her as we continue to promote Democrats’ agenda of job creation and strengthening the middle class.”

Speier will continue serving as a regional whip, a position she was elected to at the beginning of the 112th Congress.  She represents Region 2 which includes districts 1-22 in Northern California and districts in Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, and American Samoa.
