SAN MATEO, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo), Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence of the Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement today after the government of Libya announced the death of Moammar Qaddafi:

“After four decades of an iron fisted, brutal dictatorship, the Libyan people finally have an opportunity to install a government that respects and represents the right of its citizens. As democratic movements are spreading across the Middle East, I am hopeful that Libya will move towards becoming a peaceful and prosperous member of the global community.“
