San Mateo, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo/Redwood City) and a group of Californians who have lost their federal extensions of unemployment insurance will hold a press conference on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the San Francisco EDD office at 801 Turk Street.

About 1.3 million Americans lost their unemployment benefits on December 28, 2013 because Congress failed to extend them. Another 1.9 million Americans are expected to lose the benefits in the first six months of this year. In California, almost 240,000 unemployed have lost their benefits as of January 11 and at least 325,000 are expected to lose theirs in the first half of this year.

Speier stated, “These numbers are alarming, but you don’t really understand the devastating impact of losing these benefits unless you speak to the people who are affected. You will hear from individuals who lost their jobs and income through no fault of their own and all of the sudden are scared they will be homeless. We owe it to them to extend this lifeline so that they can continue looking for work and paying their rent or mortgage.”
