San Mateo, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo counties) received 3,125 cards created by preschool to high school students from 36 schools in response to her call to create Valentine’s Day cards to Veterans. The effort was supported by Superintendent Anne E. Campbell, San Mateo County Office of Education, and her staff. Speier’s staff will deliver the cards to the San Francisco VA Medical Hospital on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 10 am.

Speier was inspired by the tradition that syndicated newspaper columnist Ann Landers started 26 years ago when she encouraged her readers to send Valentines cards to veterans in VA facilities across the country. Millions of cards, letters and packages have been delivered to veterans ever since.

“Every year I am heartened by the outpouring of support for our veterans by these young students,” Speier said. “Their admiration for the men and women who serve our country is beautifully expressed in these colorful handmade cards. Every one of these messages of love will touch a veteran on Valentine’s Day.”

One message reads: “The USA flag is blue, it’s red, too. Thank you veterans, we love you.” – Alice

Another one reads: “Dear veteran, Thank you so much for your service and bravery. You gave so much for us. I hope this valentine warms your heart.” – Devon

Another one reads: “Today is a beautiful day because of all that you have done for us. Thank you so much for your amazing service! Xoxo, Jaylyn” – Jaylyn
