SAN MATEO, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee will hold a press conference on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. as part of the 2nd Annual Veteran’s Fix-It Event 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the War Memorial Veterans Building, 401 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco.

Congresswomen Speier and Lee co-sponsored the first Veterans Fix-It last May to help the VA focus on long-standing claim cases. The Oakland VA takes an average of 618 days to close an initial claim compared to a national average of 273 days. The current claims backlog at Oakland is over 30,000, about 4,000 claims less than at the time of the first Fix-It.

The second Fix-It Event includes a 10 a.m. veterans town hall with Speier and Lee that will be live-streamed at It will also feature a veterans combat art show, special presentations by Afghanistan veterans and employers who want to hire veterans (Facebook, Homeland Security, Sam Mateo Police Department, Harbor House) as well as various resource groups that help veterans. Additionally, the VA will hold 70 private interviews with vets who are experiencing claim delays. The event is free. The VA interview session is filled to capacity.

Speier stated, “The VA claims backlog is an intolerable disgrace and we won't rest until it is eliminated and the adjudications are fair."

Lee stated, “Our veterans are heroes, and they deserve timely and accurate responses from the VA. My colleagues and I will continue to fight to eliminate this unjust, unfair, and unconscionable backlog.”
