Washington DC - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo/Redwood City) issued the following statement today in response to the 7.2 earthquake in the Philippines that killed at least 90 people and destroyed historic buildings and churches:

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones and the dozens who were injured in this earthquake, estimated to be the strongest one in over 20 years. The images of collapsed buildings, bridges and roads and eye witness reports show the devastation suffered by the residents of Bohol and Cebu. With one of the largest populations of Filipinos in my district, the news hit very close to home. I wish the Filipino people and their relatives here in the U.S. strength and vigilance in the coming days.”

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Bohol Chapter staff and volunteers have been deployed to assess the damage in the affected areas. Those interested in helping the victims of the earthquake are advised to visit the PRC website. Individuals trying to locate and determine the status of relatives and friends can call my district office at (650) 342- 0300.
