Washington, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14), Chair of the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee and a champion of LGBTQ+ rights, issued the following statement in response to today’s Supreme Court Ruling affirming the rights of LGBTQ+ people to not be subjected to sex discrimination in the workplace.

“Today’s 6-3 Supreme Court ruling affirmed what most Americans already know – namely that LGBTQ+ rights are Civil Rights and it’s unconstitutional and un-American to discriminate against someone based on sexual orientation or gender identity. To have this significant legal milestone handed down during Pride Month makes it all the more sweet, but it’s tinged with the bitterness of the President’s continued campaign of using unsubstantiated claims that defy the determinations of defense experts at every level to deny our brave and loyal transgender servicemembers the honor and recognition they deserve. As we cheer this moment, let’s not forget that with this landmark victory comes even more work ahead as we push for true LGBTQ+ equality. That work must include allowing our trans servicemembers to openly serve the country we all love.”
