San Mateo, CA -- Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) on Monday released the following statement after the death of former California Senator and longtime political activist Tom Hayden, with whom the congresswoman worked for many years during their time in the California Legislature.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier

“Tom Hayden’s passing marks the loss of one of our country’s greatest champions for the poorest and most disadvantaged among us. In the 1960s, he fought against the Vietnam War, was a member of the original “Chicago Seven,” and worked for civil rights for African Americans and other minorities. Later in life, during his decades of service as a progressive political leader in the California Assembly and the State Senate, Tom never let up in his pursuit of justice and inclusion for all Americans. I was fortunate to work many years in the State Legislature with Tom, and I and so many others have been made better by his example and efforts. My condolences to his family, most especially his wife and children, and to his friends. May his lasting legacy serve as a small comfort to them during this difficult time.”
