SAN MATEO, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo counties) will host a press conference on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at San Francisco City Hall convening representatives from CCSF, San Francisco State University, and the San Mateo County Community College District to lay out and explain the steps  being taken to help the students who were displaced by the abrupt closure of Corinthian College. Thirty college sites were shut down after the U.S. Department of Education fined the for-profit college $30 million for misrepresenting job placement data at its Heald business schools. An estimated 16,000 students are affected, including students in San Francisco and other Bay Area cities.
“Bad actor for-profit schools like Corinthian are fleecing taxpayers of literally billions of dollars and leaving students with a worthless degree and mound of debt,” Speier said. “It’s our responsibility to help them regain their footing and transfer to a school that can provide them with a quality education and good job prospects without mountains of debt.”

“We know how difficult this is for these students. They are part of our community and City College is dedicated to supporting them. For 80 years we’ve provided accessible, affordable, quality education to all of our diverse communities--and we’re continuing that tradition today,” said CCSF Chancellor Arthur Tyler.

“We stand ready to assist in any way possible those students whose academic careers were derailed when the colleges they were attending closed, said SMCCCD Chancellor Ron Galatolo. “Registration for Summer and Fall semesters is currently underway and Summer Session starts on June 15.”

“SF State will make every effort to assist students who are caught in the middle of the closure of schools within Corinthian Colleges. Our Student Outreach Transfer Specialists have already met at open meetings with Corinthian students and have scheduled individual counseling appointments with students affected.”
