SAN MATEO, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo), school shooting experts, law enforcement and local officials will discuss solutions to gun violence in our schools on Monday, April 29, 2013 at the Oracle Conference Center in Redwood City, CA. The summit titled “Beyond Newtown: How to Ensure Safe Schools and Communities” was organized by Speier’s office, Supervisor Adrienne Tissier, Board President Don Horsley, Sheriff Greg Munks, retired Assemblymember Gene Mullin, and the San Mateo County Office of Education.

At the summit, educators, parents, mental health professionals, members of law enforcement, elected officials and community leaders will share their knowledge and collectively explore and implement strategies to create safer schools, increase access to mental health services and strengthen ongoing community collaboration and information sharing.

Speier stated, “We must continue to be a country where schools are safe havens for children to learn, to be able to identify children with emotional needs that go untreated, and to have in place protocols that allow schools, county services and law enforcement to work together to prevent tragedies.”

Tissier stated, "As leaders we must protect our children's right to a safe education and together take a hard look at the many aspects of this troubling issue."

Katherine Newman, Dean of the Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University and the author of “Rampage: The Social Roots of School Shootings,” commented that “Congresswoman Speier is bringing a critical focus to this pressing national issue. We have learned a lot about prevention since Columbine and can make good use of this summit meeting to speak to the safety needs of Bay Area schools.”

The summit is open to the press, but not open to the public because of space limitations. Approximately 300 individuals have been invited.
