Washington, DC - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) on Monday announced she is co-sponsoring legislation to halt President Trump’s Executive Order, which effectively bans Muslims from entering the United States from seven Muslim-majority nations: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The Statute of Liberty Values Act is being introduced by Reps. Zoe Lofgren (CA-19) and John Conyers (MI-13).

“America is built on immigrants – I am the daughter of one myself. President Trump's actions barring refugees, splitting up families, and destroying lives are unconstitutional, un-American, and reprehensible. I am ashamed at what he has done to our country and to all those individuals and families that have been impacted by this hateful policy. Let me be clear, we already have the most extensive and stringent vetting process for refugees in the world, which takes 18 to 24 months to complete  and which this ban threatens to undermine. Among the many men, women, and children detained over the weekend are patriots serving our military as translators and aides. It is outrageous that some of them remain detained or were forced to return to their country of origin. This dangerous action threatens the safety of our military service members, diplomats, and tourists abroad. The President is fueling hatred and animosity at home and overseas. We must act to overturn the Executive Order, and so I am co-sponsoring the Statue of Liberty Values Act. The Act states that the President’s Executive Order will have no effect or force of law, and that no federal funds or fees can be used to enforce it.”
