Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA) today released the following statement on the end of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

“Today the United States ends an ugly period in its history as ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ is finally repealed.  Under this policy, thousands of patriotic Americans were discharged from service just because they were born gay or lesbian. Countless others were forced to hide who they were in order to wear the uniform. And we’ll never know how many didn’t enlist because of this discriminatory policy. Today we send a clear message to all of these Americans—your service is welcome. With this militarily and morally bankrupt policy behind us, our country is stronger than it was yesterday.”
